As early as 1332, Cres (res republica Crepsa) had its statute and in 1459 it became the seat of Venetian administration for the island of Cres and Lošinj. Among the historic sites in the town one should mention the Town Gate with Clock Tower from the 16th c. which leads to the square with the Gothic-Renaissance church of St. Mary (15th c.). There are also numerous Venetian Gothic and early Renaissance buildings that house collections of cultural and historic monuments. An excellent micro-climate as well as the charming surroundings of the town of Cres offer the visitor a high-quality, active and diverse vacation. The waters of Valun and Kvarner Bays to the coast of Istria are ideal for sailing. The high-quality gastronomic offer includes the famed Cres lamb and olive oil, but also other typical island products (fruit, vegetables, herbs and brandy). There is a wide variety of sports activities: spear-fishing, tennis, mini-golf, sailing, windsurfing, bird watching (white-headed vulture - gyps fulvus).
